The Quiet Meeting in Damascus That Could Mark the End of the Kurdish Dream
The Middle East has a habit of hiding its biggest stories in plain sight.
While the world’s attention remains fixed on Gaza, Iran, Lebanon, and occasionally Ukraine & Russia, a very interesting meeting took place in Damascus that barely registered outside the region. Yet it may prove to be one of the more consequential diplomatic events of the year.
Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa (Julani), the “former” jihadi, hosted Nechirvan Barzani, the President of Iraq’s Kurdistan Region.
On the surface, the meeting was described as a discussion about regional cooperation and stability. But if you understand Middle East politics (which most dont), it may represent something much more significant: the beginning of a political settlement that could fundamentally reshape the future of Kurdish nationalism in Syria.
To understand why, you first need to understand that there isn’t a single Kurdish movement.
