The pet industry is booming - it's not hard to see why. Anyone who has ever had a furry friend knows the deep connection one has with their companion. Pets are more than just animals to us, I mean they still are animals (aren’t we all?) but they’ve transcended what they once were. No longer are they working companions herding sheep, that stay outside, eat leftovers, and are an afterthought in the family structure or travel plans.
On the contrary, our pets have become family members; no longer just an afterthought but very much like kids. We actively invest in their health, comfort & happiness. We buy them expensive beds, clothing to keep them warm in winter, healthier food that costs a pretty penny, and don’t even get me started on those vet bills. Our deep bond and attachment to one another especially with dogs (sorry cats) is the culmination of a 30,000-year relationship that has blossomed like no other duo in the animal kingdom.
However, it’s not only dogs - cats, fish, birds, rabbits, reptiles, hamsters, and horses have all found their way into our hearts.
As our relationship grows & evolves so do the industries that prop up to help us help them live their best lives by offering the latest and greatest in all manner of their lives.
For those who may not know, here are some numbers (our brains love numbers) to break down for you the size, popularity, and opportunity in this sector:
According to the American Pet Products Association, about 85 million homes in the US own a pet.
The pet industry is currently estimated to be worth a whopping $225 Billion and is one of the only recession-proof markets.
The Asia-Pacific region is the fastest-growing pet market, with a projected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.7% from 2021 to 2028.
Longer pet lifespans drive a larger investment in increasingly complex drugs like monoclonal antibodies, which could make the pet pharmaceutical market top $25 billion by 2030.
The United States is currently the largest pet market in the world, accounting for nearly 40% of global pet care sales.
The global pet food market was valued at approximately $94.8 billion USD in 2020.
